Health and Medicine

About the Course

Health and medicine course refers to the field of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illness and conditions that affect the general health and wellbeing of human beings. A career in this field is highly respected and one of the most sought-after courses by students who wish to study abroad. Medicine is a career choice particularly for those with a desire to make a real difference to people.
The different specialisations in Health and Medicine include Dentistry; Physiotherapy; Nursing; Midwifery; Nutrition; Psychology and Public Health among others. The human body is complex and made up of many different organs, and processes. Once the basic or foundation course is completed, students can choose to specialise in an organ or function like cardiology; neurology; endocrinology; oncology etc.
Like all other career options, to succeed in health and medicine, one must have the urge to work hard and give it the best shot possible. Those who opt for this field are likely to engage with individuals who demand empathy, patience, and a gentle and kind demeanour. Interpersonal skills are important to bring comfort and reassurance to patients when they are scared, or anxious. Medicine is far from a conventional 9 to 5 job as medicos can be ‘on call’ which requires dropping everything to see to an emergency. Achieving a work-life balance can be very difficult, especially at the beginning of your career, but it is offset by the lives positively impacted.
In most countries, the Health and Medicine course ranges from 3-8 years. Each country has its own set of parameters to assess students and different names like MBBS, MD etc.
