History
The Evening Institute for Younger Men, located at the Huntington Avenue YMCA, held its first class on October 3, 1898, starting what would transform into Northeastern University over the course of four decades. The School of Law was formally established that year with the assistance of an Advisory Committee, consisting of Dean James Barr Ames of the Harvard University School of Law, Dean Samuel Bennett of the Boston University School of Law, and Judge James R. Dunbar. In 1903, the first Automobile Engineering School in the country was established followed by the School of Commerce and Finance in 1907. Day classes began in 1909. In 1916, a bill was introduced into the Massachusetts Legislature to incorporate the institute as Northeastern College. After considerable debate and investigation, it was passed in March 1916.
On March 30, 1917, Frank Palmer Speare was inaugurated as the new College's first President. Five years later the school changed its name to Northeastern University to better reflect the increasing depth of its instruction. In March 1923, the University secured general (A.B. and B.S.) degree-granting power from the Legislature, with the exception of the medical and dental degrees.
In today’s fast-moving, the hypercompetitive marketplace, employers expect employees and job applicants to demonstrate a dedication to keeping pace with the latest advances and practices in their industry. Our programs offer the adult professional the conveniences of an education tailored for today’s workforce: flexibility, choices in delivery and locations, and programs aligned with emerging and innovative fields.

Experiential Learning
Northeastern’s leadership in experiential learning—the integration of classroom study with professional experience—provides a strong foundation for the university’s expansion to new regions, including Seattle. Northeastern is making the virtual classroom more dynamic, connected, and real by integrating the professional workplace into its online and hybrid degree programs.
Online Programs
Northeastern offers more than 100 online degree and certificate programs. The university’s portfolio of online graduate programs—in business, government, education, healthcare, leadership and management, and science and technology—is among the largest of any private research university in the U.S.
Graduate Certificates
We offer graduate certificate programs—online and on-campus—aligned with industry and career demands, enabling Seattle working professionals to keep pace with the latest advances and practices in their industry.
These certificates—comprising four to six graduate-level courses—are “stackable.” Students can steadily build out their knowledge and skillset to take their career in the direction that works best for them. And if they elect to pursue an advanced degree after successful completion of a certificate program, course credits may be transferred to a related Northeastern master’s degree program.
Our Delivery Model
Northeastern faculty members in online- and hybrid-based programs integrate their deep theoretical knowledge with strong professional experience. Using the technology tools that have made online education a rich learning environment, they draw from a wide array of resources that enable students to apply new knowledge directly to the problem-solving needs of the workplace.
