There were only 34 students when Lakeland College opened in 1913. Today the College has two campuses and over 7000 full- and part-time students––but Lakeland is as tight-knit as ever. The classes are small so instructors get to know their students––not just their names but also their wants needs hopes and fears. They can sense when to challenge each student and when to cut them some slack. If students have questions or concerns the door’s always open. Same goes for all the student services that are offered––from financial aid to peer tutoring counselling to recreation. Lakeland’s comfortable setting allows its students to focus on learning. Lakeland's award-winning programs are designed for an easy transition into the work force and/or further study whether it be at Lakeland or somewhere else. Students will get a university-caliber education at Lakeland College––but without the red tape the big crowds and the distractions. Lakeland College began in 1913 as the Vermilion School of Agriculture and it still has a countryside feel: green lawns mature trees and as much sky as one could want. A lot of the learning at Vermilion takes place outdoors––on the college farm the Emergency Training Centre's training grounds or the environmental science programs field labs. But times have changed since 1913 and so has Lakeland's campus at Vermilion. Today the campus's modern classrooms and computer labs support coursework in more than eight disciplines including award-winning programs in interior design trades and early learning and child care. Enrolment at Vermilion numbers nearly 2000 today with more than 500 of those students living on campus a few minutes' walk from the classrooms. It's the more rural of Lakeland's two campuses––offering a true small-town college experience. Why Lakeland College - Vermilion Student Ranking: In 2017 over 40000 students and alumni were surveyed and asked to rank their college or university in 55 different categories. Out of 63 colleges across Canada Lakeland College is honoured to be recognized as one of the top performing institutions in all of Canada including 1st in colleges most recommended by students.
