About USMLE

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is one of the most premier examinations for medical students. While other exams test the students on their textbook knowledge, the USMLE is a comprehensive test that evaluates candidates on the basis of the application of their knowledge, skills and attitudes in actual medical centred situations.

Introduction

USMLE is an examination conducted in a three-step format. This exam is taken by those aspiring for a medical license in the United States. 
The prestigious USMLE is organised and conducted in conjunction with the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). 

What is USMLE?

Practising medicine in the USA requires additional tests to assess the proficiency and skill of the applicant. USMLE is the test that has been designed to enable licensing for practice, residency and fellowship in the USA. 
USMLE is renowned for being one of the toughest medical entrance exams to crack. Most students take help of USMLE online coaching to crack the exams in one shot.

Eligibility Criteria

For Step 1 and Step 2
The examinee must be enrolled in or should be a graduate of a medical school outside the US and Canada, which has been registered in the World Directory of Medical Schools and meets the criteria set by ECFMG. The enrolment and the degree needs to be valid and meet eligibility requirements at the time of application and examination.
For Step 3-
The examinee must be a holder of an MD degree (or its equivalent) from a medical school that has been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. They should also meet ECFMG eligibility requirements.
The examinees also need to have passed the examination evaluation at Step 1, Step 2 which is CK, while possessing ECFMG Certification.

The format or steps for USMLE

USMLE is comprised of three steps:

Format or steps for USMLE

USMLE is comprised of three steps:
  1. Step 1
  2. Step 2, which has two components: Clinical Skills (CS) and Clinical Knowledge (CK)
  3. Step 3

Step-1

This is the USMLE online test format or a one-day e-test format. This is commonly taken by students in their second year of medicine. This step evaluates the aspirants on the basis of their knowledge for- basic sciences, including anatomy, biochemistry, behavioral sciences, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology. They may also cover the topics of nutrition, genetics and ageing. The test is designed to lay emphasis on the principles and mechanisms of various underlying health, disease, and modes of therapy

USMLE online test is actually a computer-based evaluation. The test comprises 280 Multiple choice questions (MCQ's) divided into 7 sixty-minute blocks of 40 Multiple Choice Questions ( MCQs ) each. For each question, a student has 90 seconds.

It is preferred for students to have enrolled in USMLE online course to enable them to crack the first round. 

The USMLE online test is conducted at Prometric test centers around the world.

Step-2 CK

 Step 2 of the test is conducted to assess the application of medical knowledge.

Clinical Knowledge- CK is a multiple–choice question based exam, which tests the aptitude on topics of clinical sciences. The most likely subjects are- surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology.  With the new changes, it also focuses on patient scenarios, questions based on patient charts, familiar medical abbreviations etc. It also lays focus on multiple principles of clinical science.

Here the aspirant is evaluated on About 316 MCQs divided into 8 sixty-minute blocks.

This step is beneficial to evaluate the examinee’s aptitude when it comes to applying medical knowledge, skills, and applying clinical science. These skills are a prerequisite for the provision of patient care and lay emphasis on health promotion and Disease Prevention

This is the most expensive round as the examination is conducted in person in one of 5 US cities. Therefore, it is always recommended to enrol in a USMLE online course to strengthen your knowledge and do away with nervousness.

Step-3

Step 3 of the test is more commonly attempted during the residency period. It is a two-day evaluation test. This is the final step in licensing practitioners for unsupervised general practitioning. 

FOUNDATIONS OF INDEPENDENT PRACTICE is the test on the first day of examination. Here, nearly 233 multiple choice questions were divided into 6, sixty-minute blocks. This is a computer-based examination
 
On day 2, ADVANCED CLINICAL MEDICINE (ACM)  skills are evaluated, where approximately 180 Multiple Choice Questions are to be answered. These are divided into 6 in forty-five minutes blocks.
There are 13 computer-based case simulations (CCS). An approximate time of 10-20 minutes are allowed for each of the simulation. USMLE on
Step 3 is the final step that is conducted for testing the examinee’s knowledge and their understanding of biomedical and clinical sciences.

    USMLE is a licensing examination for those wanting to practice medicine in the United States of America. It is an extremely challenging examination that tests the Knowledge of students at 3 levels. The first two levels are for those who are still studying, the final level is for those who have completed their graduation. Popularly known as the boards, this set of examinations help students explore cutting edge technology in medicine and research.

The field of your choice will depend on your scores, the better your scores, the more are your chances of getting a specialisation of your choice. In the USA for practice, then USMLE is worth doing. If not then it is not worth doing.

  1. How many times can I give USMLE Step 1?

    The Step 1 exams are commonly called the boards or USMLE online exams. This test is conducted to gauge the candidate’s ability to understand and apply the basic principle and fundamentals of science to medical practice.

    The test can not be retaken if you are unhappy with the scores or you need to increase the score. In case you fail to clear the boards then you can take the boards 6 times. The boards are allowed to be taken a maximum of three times in the 12 month period. The rule states that after the third attempt, the fourth attempt can only be taken after  6 months of the third attempt. The next few attempts of the exam can only be taken at least 12 months subsequent to the candidates first attempt. It should also be at least six months after the candidate's last attempt.

    With USMLE coaching it is possible to get high scores and crack the exam in a few or just one attempt. Therefore, it is important to choose the correct USMLE online course that will make your journey productive.

  2. Why is the USMLE so expensive?

Also, the second level of USMLE exams needs to be taken among 5 select cities of the United States. So the cost of USMLE also needs to add to the traveling and staying cost for International students.
