OVERVIEW

The United Arab Emirates is a federation that comprises seven emirates in the eastern Arab peninsula. Three fourth of the land area comprises Abu Dhabi, the primary city being the port city Dubai. Dubai is the port city and the economic and social hub. Housing the financial hubs, skyscraping apartments. The UAE is a hotbed for activity. It is a desert land, with coastal plains and barren mountains. It is a modern country with an emphasis on its traditions and customs. 


Why study in the UAE?

The study options here are diverse and the colleges here range from small colleges to large universities. The UAE and their Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) regulates education. This guarantees high-quality education and at competitive standards.


The seven emirates have a lot to visit and explore. The sand dunes have been converted to host some of the world's finest sights such as the Performing art centre, Burj Al Khalifa and others.


It is one of the safest countries, with a low tolerance for crime.

Education System in the UAE

The higher education system in the UAE is organised on the basis of different institutions in the seven emirates. Most of these institutions have private and public colleges and universities. The UAE has three government universities:

  • UAE University- Premier institution of the UAE which has internationally accredited programs

  • Zayed University- traditionally women-only institutions, which now also admit men

  • Higher Colleges of Technology- this is UAE’s largest university

Eligibility

  • The students applying for undergraduate examinations need to have completed their senior secondary degree 

  • The degree must have been completed in the last three years

  • The students must have had no disciplinary record

  • Fulfilled all the requirements of the desired university

  • Adequate scores from English Proficiency examinations

Part-time work opportunities

The UAE government encourages students to work alongside their education. The pay here is very good and the jobs are non-exploitative. The UAE levies no income tax on salaries. 


The conditions under which a student can work are:

  • The student must be over 18 years of age

  • The students are allowed to work for 6 days and have to have one day off

  • They can only work for a maximum of 6 hours a day

  • On receipt of the job, the employer must apply for a student work permit


The UAE is one of the only few countries which treat part-time jobs as career jobs. There is no limitation for students to work. Students can work in any field, some of them are:

  • Graphic design jobs

  • Medical assistant jobs

  • Tour guides

  • Content writing and development jobs

  • Translators

  • Social Media expert jobs

  • Restaurant servers and waiters

PSW Visa

The revised amendments in the visa laws have benefited students studying in Dubai.

According to the new laws:

  • Students from UAE universities are eligible for a 5-year work visa as opposed to one in most other places

  • Meritorious students who prove their academic proficiency get a 10-year work visa as opposed to the 5 of others

  • Professionally trained students like doctors and engineers are also eligible for the 10-year visa

  • Students must pass a medical evaluation before extending their stay

  • The students must be in contract with the employer while working after their studies

Scholarship

Al Qasimi Foundation’s Doctoral Research Grants-- This grant is awarded by Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation and is awarded to doctoral students. The quantum of the grant covers tuition expenses, living expenses, airfare and stipend to cover research support for a period of 12 months.

Living Expenses

Tuition Fee in UAE varies from each emirate to the other, but on average it is- between 37,500 to 70,000 AED per year. The postgraduate program costs 55,000 to 75,000 AED per year.


  • Monthly Rent- 3000 AED to 5500 AED
  • Monthly Transport Pass- 107 AED
  • Meals- 3500 AED - 4100 AED per month
  • Other expenses 2100 AED- 2900 AED

Life & Culture

Student life

Culture

The people of the UAE are called Emirati. One of the most developing and modern looking countries that still value their traditions and cultures. Their culture is visible in all aspects of their lives, namely fashion, food, style of welcome and greeting. 


It is a country where both meat and vegetarian cooking is high in demand. The meals are mostly large and shared with friends and family. 


Emirati men mostly dress in a Kandura and the women in Hijaabs or Abayas. 

This is a country with a high interest in sports. Camel racing, Horse racing, Falconry are some of the most popular sports. 


There is an abhorrence to alcohol or substance abuse.

  • Dubai- It is not just a city. It is a magical realm. A desert city that has the largest skyscraper in Burj Al Khalifa, other lavish architecture, skylines, shopping, souks. A global city that has changed the face of modernisation

  • Abu Dhabi- A medley of modern stylish architecture with intricate and beautiful cultural monuments, Abu Dhabi is one beautiful place to visit. Mosques, theme parks, shopping malls are all massive in scale. It is one of the richest cities in the world. The desert outback is rustic and has an old-world charm

  • Sharjah- It is a city that is regarded as the cultural capital of the Arab World. It is a city rich in culture, tradition and heritage. The art museum here is unparalleled. There are some very interesting sites here

  • Al-Ain- It is an oasis. Found on the trading route of Oman to the UAE, this small and sleepy town is a major tourist attraction. It has splendid greenery and lushness in the midst of a desert

  • Ajman- It is a city of beauty and beaches. From forts to beaches, museums to shopping complexes, this city offers everything for a tourist to regale in
